Educational Advocacy

What if I am not sure if my child needs help in school?

While some parents know their child has a disability, others don’t suspect anything until the child has been in school. For definite answers, ask the school to do a full assessment. You will need to fill out a Referral Form from the school to start the process. The assessment is conducted by the school at no charge; the service is free and must also be done in a timely manner. The school has 30 school days to complete the assessment.

What is an Individual Education Plan (IEP)?

An IEP is a plan that is prepared jointly by a team that must include a parent or guardian and may include the student, school administrator, guidance counselor, teachers, other family members and other staff, including advocates for the family. The purpose of the IEP is to coordinate any special services the student may need to provide an education in the least restrictive environment. SKIL can assist in an advocacy role, whether the family wants support in an initial planning session or requires technical support for complex situations.

What if there is disagreement about the IEP?

Because the team consists of different people who are involved with the student in different areas, it’s not unusual to have different points of view. However, the IEP is not a concrete document. It can be modified at any time. The team can meet to discuss the student’s progress and the outcome of strategies in the plan. If the team reaches a stalemate about the value of a therapy or program, you may request an outside assessment. Again, in such situations you may request advocacy assistance from SKIL.
