Employment Questions

Can I work with a disability?

Yes. In fact, not only can you work, but SKIL is available to support you in your journey to find employment. Under ADA, employment of capable workers with disabilities is a goal. The law provides assistance to employers and employees for assessing job requirements and helping both parties to successfully meet the needs. How can I get help for finding employment?

All government services that assist in the employment process are available. This means Vocational Rehabilitation will assist in developing a plan to retrain and educate you for a new position. The One Stop Centers are helpful in reviewing the available job openings and in helping you prepare an application. Many employees with disabilities have excellent productivity and attendance records, which employers appreciate.

What accommodations should I expect an employer to offer?

Well, first you need to make specific requests in writing. You and your employer or potential employer may want to have a work assessment done by SKIL to determine what accommodations the job may require. Often the adjustments are relatively minor and inexpensive. For those that are not, employers may find they are eligible for tax credits or other assistance that will offset the cost.
