Abuse; Neglect; Exploitation training video
Hi I am Dave Sorrick. I'm the Director of Development and Special Projects at SKIL Resource Center. I am also a Licensed Clinical Psychotherapist. Today I want to talk to you about the importance of keeping our customers safe. And safeguards that are in place in Kansas law to prevent abuse, neglect, and exploitation. Kansas law 306328 forbids abuse, neglect, and exploitation of our customers.
If you suspect abuse there is a 800 Hotline Number for you to call. That number is 1-800-922-5330. Any person served can call that number, or any family member loved one or care giver can call 1-800-922-5330
ABUSE is defined as:
Any act or failure to act performed intentionally or recklessly that causes or is likely to cause harm, including: infliction of physical or mental injury; sexual abuse; unreasonable use of physical or chemical restraints; isolation, medications; threats or menacing conduct; fiduciary abuse or omission or deprivation by a caretaker or another person of goods or services which are necessary to avoid physical or mental harm or illness.
I guess what we are saying here is that any act that is preformed carelessly or with intention that causes harm or may cause harm could be considered to be abuse.
Certainly we expect our customers will be free from any type of physical or mental injury. Free from any type of sexual abuse. Free from the use of chemical restraints or isolation or any threats or conduct that would result in injury. Also any financial abuse or admission or deprivation by a care giver is neglect. Is also forbidden.
In the statute NEGLECT is defined as:
Failure or omission by one's self, caretaker or another person to provide goods or services which are reasonably necessary to ensure safety and well being and to avoid physical or mental ham or illness.
And EXPLOITATION is also defined in the statute as:
Misappropriation of an adult's property or intentionally taking unfair advantage of an adults physical or financial resources.
In your training packet you will be asked to sign a document that says you have read and understand this law. And that you agree not to engage in conduct that could be considered abuse, neglect, or exploitation.
If you have any questions contact one of the SKIL representatives at 1-800-688-5616. And to report abuse that important hotline number is 1-800-922-5330.
Thank you very much.
